L80 Race Report: RSR CW 2016-08-06
#1
Firstly, thank you to everyone who assisted in getting the car race ready after Phakisa: Garreth, Estelle and Sean A. Garreth did all the hard work, found and rectified a few issues on the front suspension and replaced all the broken bits.

In the two weeks following up to the race I watched some of Juan's YouTube videos to try and memorise the track in it's clockwise configuration, as I have never raced this way around.  It is tricky to find a rythm, but I managed to spot a few brake markers and sort of figure out the layout.

Friday practice went really well.  The car was great and I managed to bring my times down to 2:16.38 by the end of the day, which I was quite chuffed with, given the lap record was a 2:16.095

Qualifying went well on Saturday and I managed a few consistant laps and got pole for both races with times around 2:16.7

Race 1 got underway and I bogged down slightly and Johan passed me going into T1. This was the first time I raced with him over the weekend as the track is long enough to give everyone space. I knew from the qualifying times that I was quicker, but not sure where.  I followed Johan around for the first lap and passed him on lap 2, only to be passed again at T6. It turns out Johan was MUCH quicker than me through T6 and T7.  I looked at what he was doing and tried the same the next lap.  It turns out I was losing a second in just that section.  I managed to pass Johan again and went on to win by 15 seconds and break the lap record a few times in the race with the fastest lap being set on the last lap, a 2:15.097

Race 2 started and guess what, Johan passed me again... I can't even say it's the car as he was racing a different car this weekend, guess he is just that good on the start.  Back to the drawing board with my starts.

Willie also snuck by after I ended up behind Sean after his sideshaft snapped. I managed to pass Willie and the next lap Johan and had a clean and consistent race and took victory by 25 seconds.

Overall a great weekend for me and my team. We take home a trophy, a lap record and a car in one piece.

Thanks to Johan Powell for fair, tough and most importantly, clean racing in the first race.

A BIG thanks to Trans Global for supporting me this year!

See you at Phakisa.
